Since April 24, 2004 Laparkan Shipping and Money Transfer along with Dr. Una S. T. Clarke have been committed to expanding community outreach by successfully
awarded The Laparkan Una Clarke Caribbean-American Scholarship Fund, created to assist New York's promising young students of Caribbean descent with their
educational needs.
With a successful record of giving, Laparkan Shipping and Dr. Clarke understand the importance of providing educational opportunities to New York's
Caribbean community. Applications are available at all Laparkan locations and completed application packages must be submitted no later than June 15
for qualification.

Administered by Laparkan, the goal of this program is to reward Caribbean/Caribbean-American students who are actively involved in or have participated in
projects related to the improvement of the Caribbean community in New York City. An Advisory Committee has been established to evaluate the selection
process and to give guidance to the program. Four scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors/college freshmen who have been accepted to or
are currently enrolled in accredited colleges/universities within the United States.
The Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in late June and all current and last year's awardees are required to attend.

In addition, Laparkan has recognized the distinguished career of Dr. the Hon. Una S. T. Clarke for her committed public service and contributions
to New York City's Caribbean community. Making history in 1991, Dr. Clarke was the first Caribbean born person to be elected to the New York City Council
(East Flatbush 40th Councilmanic District) and since her retirement from public office, she has remained diligent in serving the needs of the Caribbean
community with distinction and pride.
Dr. Una Clarke is now an international business consultant, and connects clients with business opportunities
in the Caribbean and in the diaspora.

LAPARKAN UNA CLARKE CARIBBEAN AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA
To qualify for the Scholarship YOU MUST:
1. Be a graduating Caribbean/Caribbean-American high school senior presently attending an accredited high school in New York City
with proof of acceptance and enrollment at an accredited college within the USA or a college freshman currently enrolled for the
next semester. (restrictions apply)
2. Have a cumulative high school GPA of 85 and above or college GPA of 3.0 and above.
3. Have volunteered with a Caribbean/Caribbean-American organization, committee, or project
or have volunteered with an organization that serves the Caribbean community.
4. Have completed a summer internship for 20 hours p/wk at a non-profit organization.

Submit the following with your application:
1. Proof of Caribbean descent or parentage.
2. Three letters of reference from school or community organization.
3. Copy of official high school transcript and SAT scores (high school students only).
4. Copy of official college transcript and proof of current enrollment (copy of
Bursar's receipt (college students only).
A 500-word, typewritten, double-spaced using a 12pt. font essay must accompany your application detailing the following:
1. Identify an existing problem/issue within the Caribbean community or with Caribbean youth that needs to be addressed.
2. A plan for the implementation of a program that outlines a measurable solution to the related problem/issue within the Caribbean community.
3. List ways to enhance the program in the future.
4. Why is it important to have a college education and how will you use that education to uplift the Caribbean community.
