LAPARKAN ANNOUNCES 5th ANNUAL LAPARKAN UNA CLARKE CARIBBEAN-AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIP.
DEADLINE JUNE 15, 2009
The Honorable Dr. Una S. T. Clarke continues to serve as Laparkan Shipping and Money Transfer’s Vice President of International Affairs. Committed to expanding Laparkan’s community outreach and involvement, Dr. Clarke is announcing the next Laparkan-Una Clarke Caribbean-American Scholarship Award Ceremony, scheduled for June, 2009.
Since April 24, 2004 Laparkan Shipping and Money Transfer and former City Council member Clarke have successfully awarded 15 scholarships through the Laparkan Una Clarke Caribbean-American Scholarship Fund - a scholarship created to assist New York’s promising young students with their educational needs and providing encouragement to students in the local Caribbean community.
Applications are available at all Laparkan locations and completed application packages must be submitted no later than June 15, 2009.

The scholarships are administered by Laparkan, and the goal of this program is to reward Caribbean/Caribbean-American students who are actively involved or have participated in projects related to the improvement of the Caribbean community in New York City. An Advisory Committee has been established to evaluate the selection process and to give guidance to the program.
Three scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors/college freshmen who have been accepted to or are currently enrolled in accredited colleges/universities within the United States for the Fall 2008 semester. The Awards ceremony will take place in June, 2009 (date to be announced), and all current and last year’s awardees are required to attend.

In addition, Laparkan has recognized the distinguished Dr. the Hon. Una Sylvia Tomlinson Clarke for her committed public service and her selfless contribution to New York City’s Caribbean community.
Making history in 1991, Dr. Clarke was the first Caribbean-born person to be elected to the New York City Council (representing East Flatbush-40th Councilmanic District) and since her retirement from public office, she has continued to serve the needs of the Caribbean community with distinction and pride.
